Agency Director, Cor J.W. Meijer, and Assistant Director, Amanda Watkins, will take part in a webinar on the role of teachers on 18 March.
The event is organised by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (DG EAC). Representatives from DG EAC and the current Portuguese and former Croatian Presidencies of the Council of the European Union will examine the role of teachers within three recent European documents:
- The Commission’s ‘Communication on achieving the European Education Area by 2025’
- The ‘Council Resolution on a strategic framework for European cooperation in education and training towards the European Education Area and beyond (2021–2030)’
- The ‘Council conclusions on European teachers and trainers for the future’ that were adopted last year during the Croatian Presidency.
Participants will also explore the key features of the Commission’s planned Erasmus+ Teacher Academies, which section 3.4 of the Communication introduced. The Academies aim to share expertise and best practice in teacher education, and develop long-lasting co‑operation between teacher education providers in Europe. Mr Meijer and Ms Watkins will contribute to a panel discussion on European collaboration and the Academies’ potential to improve teachers’ professional development for inclusive education.
The webinar will be streamed live on the Commission’s website. A recording will also be available on the School Education Gateway.
In addition, Mr Meijer will deliver a keynote speech on 22 March as part of the Portuguese Presidency’s meeting of the Directors-General for Schools. The meeting will focus on the challenges and issues surrounding equity and inclusion in education. Mr Meijer will speak about the progress and challenges in Europe in relation to inclusive education. There will be presentations from Portugal’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO and representatives from the Commission, as well as the forthcoming Slovenian Presidency.
